Q. 「京たたみ」の特徴を教えて下さい。

A. 框(かまち)に板を縫い付ける「板入れ」という技法が大きな特徴です。 畳表の端を糸で絡める「からくり」という技法も独特です 一切、機械の使用は認められず、総手縫いとなります。

宗教儀式に使用される厚畳・拝敷等の有職畳も指定工場で製作された場合は「京たたみ」に分類されます。

Q: What are the characteristics of Kyo-tatami? 

A: A significant feature of Kyo-tatami is the ita-ire technique, where planks are sewn to the tatami's shorter edges to maintain the shape. Karakuri, where the edge of the tatami's top layer is finished with thread, is another unique technique. The use of machines are not permitted at any stage, and everything is handsewn. If produced at designated factories, the special types of tatami used for religious ceremonies are also classified as Kyo-tatami.
